Pre-Employment Health Assessments

Pre-employment health assessments can be a valuable part of the recruitment process and form the basis of front-line risk management.

Benefits of assessment include:

  • Insight into an employee’s physical capacity to safely meet the functional demands of a job before they start work.
  • Record baseline health status' for each employee at commencement so pre-existing health conditions are identified and not attributed to your workplace.
  • Identify any medical or health problems that may impact on the prospective employees’ ability to carry out their job safely before they start work.
  • Identify previously undetected health or medical issues which may, with suggested management strategies, improve long term health outcomes for individuals and organisations.
  • Address specific physical or health concerns relative to an organisation’s work environment.
  • Ensure that prospective employees are free from drug and alcohol use prior to starting the role.

Screening Questionnaire

Through our patient management system, 2CRisk, prospective employees are sent a link to an online pre-employment health questionnaire.

The questionnaire can be tailored to the workplace and work role risks and requirements and can be completed on any device – phone, tablet, computer.

Once completed the questionnaire is scrutinised by our Occupational Health Nurses who will determine if there are any declared health factors which may impact on the person’s ability to undertake their role.

If any issues are identified that require further review, the nurse will contact the worker for clarification and also seek support from our Occupational Physician if needed.

A certificate of fitness will be issued on completion with advice of the prospective employees’ medical suitability for employment together with any recommendations, limitations and adjustments required.

Nurse led Pre-employment Health Assessment

Our occupational health nurses can complete a range of health testing to establish a prospective employees baseline health information and fitness for role. This may include:

  • Health, Medical and Employment history via 2CRisk online screening questionnaire
  • ACC History check
  • Biometrics – pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, Waist circumference
  • Urine test (for protein, blood, sugar)
  • Lung Function test
  • Vision screening
  • Musculoskeletal range of movement and grip strength
  • Drug and Alcohol testing
  • If any issues are identified that require further review, the nurse can seek support from our Occupational Physicians.

A certificate of fitness will be issued on completion with advice of the prospective employees’ medical suitability for employment together with baseline health monitoring information (hearing, lung function etc.) any recommendations, limitations and adjustments required.

Pre-employment Medical Assessment

Through our network of employed and contracted GP’s, Fit For Work can provide a full range of pre-employment medical led assessments.

A company’s own forms or Fit For Work’s forms and online questionnaires can be utilised for the medical.

In addition to testing completed by nurse led pre-employments, the medicals may include:

  • Physical examination of cardiovascular, skin, gastrointestinal, nervous, musculoskeletal and sensory systems
  • Completion of blood screening request and interpretation of results
  • Travel medicine consultation and vaccinations
  • Resting ECG

A certificate of fitness will be issued on completion with advice of the prospective employees’ medical suitability for employment together with any recommendations, limitations and adjustments required.

Pre-employment Functional Assessment

Completed by a qualified Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist, Pre-employment Functional Assessments provide an objective assessment of the prospective employee’s physical capacity for the work role, by completing a series of tests and tasks which simulate the physical demands of the role.

The testing is always aligned to the job requirements and may include:

  • Safe maximum lifting and carrying test
  • Strength tests (back, abdominal, legs, upper limbs)
  • Range of movement
  • Postural tolerances
  • Push/pull testing

In addition, a thorough health and medical history via 2CRisk is completed and reviewed. The functional test can also be combined with a nurse led or doctor led health assessment.

Pre-employment Driver Medicals

It is important to ensure that any workers driving a vehicle do not have a health condition that would impact on their and others safety on the road. Therefore, Fit For Work specifically offers Driver Medicals which are aligned with the NZTA Medical Aspects of Fitness to Drive requirements.

The medical may include:

  • Detailed health and medical history assessment through 2CRisk online questionnaire
  • Assessment by a GP experienced in NZTA Driver Medicals and Medical Aspects of Fitness to Drive
  • Examination as per Class 2-5 Medical requirements and any additional work role fitness-based requirements
  • Provision of fitness for role certification
