Osseointegration is a surgery involving placing an implant into an amputated limb to serve as a connection point for a prosthetic leg. Well before osseointegration surgery is contemplated, a multi-disciplinary team assessment takes place to ascertain the suitability of the individual for the service. The team is inclusive the Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Orthopedic Surgeon, Nurse, Dietician and Clinical Prosthetist.
Once an individual has been accepted and funding has been approved, two surgeries are required. At the completion of the second surgery the individual is required to remain in Christchurch for a period of 6-8 weeks to complete their loading and rehabilitation programme.
